RESUMO:

The Campo Grande neighborhood, located in the west of the city of Rio de Janeiro, was, until the middle of the twentieth century, a rural area, composed mainly of sites and farms producing orange, vegetables and others. With the crash of citrus in the 1950s, rural properties were transformed into land subdivisions that transformed the old rural area, and brought social and environmental consequences. This work aims to understand how the ancient allotments boosted the urban development of the neighborhood, through testimonials of residents who experienced this transformation, identifying the impacts of this transformation from daily life. For this, the Oral History was adopted as a method, which consists of conducting interviews with people who are preferentially elderly or who witnessed facts of different orders, which may contribute to a scientific research. It is noticeable that with the emergence of the former subdivisions, the urban development of the neighborhood was accelerated over time, reconfiguring the local space and bringing social and environmental impacts. Thus, it is concluded that Historical Geography, associated with the testimonies of former residents of the neighborhood, has much to contribute to this research.
