RESUMO:

The accelerated and disordered urbanization process of many Brazilian cities can create a number of problems for the population, as well as many challenges for the institutions and agencies responsible for land management, planning and planning. In this context, the watersheds are important units of environmental planning and management, but undergo interventions that may impact the quality of the environment and the life of the population. Changes in the geomorphological patterns of watercourses, removal of riparian forest and pollution and contamination of river channels contribute to the process of degradation of water resources. This degradation scenario can accelerate the frequency and intensity of natural events associated with floods and floods. Thus, talking about the floods that occur in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, we understand that this is an urban social and environmental problem that causes a series of consequences and damage to the affected population. In Nova Iguaçu, a city belonging to the RMRJ, it can be said that the interaction of natural and anthropogenic factors contribute to the occurrence of floods. The city records high rainfall during the summer and is part of a lowland geomorphological context, presenting many flooded areas that were cleared for urban occupation, where modifications were made in the natural profile of the rivers through rectification and channeling works. As a result, a portion of the population lives in risk areas and is, in many cases, in conditions of social vulnerability. In this sense, the Rio Botas, one of the main rivers of the municipality, suffers from impacts related to urban occupation on its banks, waste disposal, sewage discharge in natura, and the occurrence of floods. From this question, this research aims to analyze the perception of flood risk of residents of Comendador Soares, neighborhood of Nova Iguaçu that is affected by the overflow of the Rio Botas. To this end, the methodology developed to analyze perception will occur through fieldwork and semi-structured interviews that will seek to understand how residents perceive, cope and think about the risk of flooding. In addition, we seek to analyze the natural and anthropogenic conditions that can influence the occurrence of flooding in the Rio Botas by studying the physical and social aspects of the area, based on the analysis of rainfall, land use and occupation that the basin has is included and the history of flooding recorded by the municipal Civil Defense.
