RESUMO:

In this research we present problems about the production of Vale do Café, which are discussed in its regional appropriation. By revealing an area marked by the history of Imperial Brazil in the nineteenth century, today the region has experienced new economic, political and cultural dynamics that emerge after the years 1990.  The Vale do Café became (re) known from the public policies of tourism triggered by agents of the economic field and the political field. New representations are disseminated by these agents who resonate with notions of identity, culture and development. Representations are instruments of regional legitimacy. Destarte, Vale do Café announces an "ideal representation of a region", which corroborates to understand the material and intangible dimensions of this key concept of geography in the valley. It is essential to denaturalize the Vale do Café in order to reach it as an appropriate social/spatial entity by entrepreneurs, public power and media (social and press) which build new representations. It is, therefore, with the theoretical contribution of Pierre Bourdieu, Roberto Lobato Corrêa and the renewing developments of Serge Moscovici and Denise Jodelet in the theory of social representations, which this research constitutes. The statements and practices of its political, economic and cultural actors in Vale do Café are empirical inputs.
