The Vaccine Revolt: political authoritarianism in the production of modern space
spatial fix; urban reforms; political authoritarianism; Vaccine Revolt
The work consists of a reading of Revolta da Vacina that combines an analysis of the transformations of the urban space in Rio de Janeiro during the period, an attempt to understand Brazilian political structures (authoritarianism) and an understanding of the "place" of Brazil and the city of Rio in the context of world capitalism. It is, therefore, about understanding the reforms in Rio in the beginning of the 20th century (mainly the Passos Reformation) as a process of spatial adjustment, the specific way in which the political layers carried out these reforms and the popular revolt as a response to everything. that. The research is inserted, therefore, in a perspective of Historical Geography, bringing together the theoretical contributions of authors such as David Harvey, but also the historical analysis of Lilia Schwarcz and Jaime Benchimol.
