The project Projeto Bairro-escola Nova Iguaçu, which operated from 2006 to 2010, under the administration of Mayor Lindberg Farias – PT, was an educational public policy whose main objective was to transform the various spaces in the neighborhoods into large classrooms, seeking to value not only educational aspects but
also to recognize the importance of social, cultural, moral and ethical values in the formation of human beings.
It was also an urban intervention project that had as its kick-off and finish line the search for integral education. Its main assumption was the recognition that people are educated in the city, in their social networks, in the places, territories where they live. The central axis of this new program of action by the government was to build a policy that deeply valued public education, encouraging the creation of a school space
integrated to the community. The project Projeto Bairro-escola Nova Iguaçu extrapolated the barriers of the walls of the schools. The school space became the entire city: public spaces, commercial establishments, associations, cultural centers and churches. In this sense, it is opportune to understand the consequences of this project to broaden the discussion on the role of educating cities and education in non-formal spaces, as well as to think about the urban transformations produced from the implementation of the Project Bairro Escola Nova Iguaçu. Therefore, the focus of this research is to study the educational, political and territorial aspects and the legacies of this public education policy, having as a research field the Municipal School Professora Anna Maria Ramalho, located in the center of the Miguel Couto neighborhood in Nova Iguaçu.
