Water as a commodity: Neoliberalism and sustainable development in the Região dos Lagos – RJWater, neoliberalism, privatization, sustainable development, Região dos Lagos.
The objective of this research was to evaluate, in the light of economic geography, the water management model adopted by Prolagos, a company that for two decades has been in charge of water distribution in a good part of the so-called Região dos Lagos in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This model, the result of a privatization process that took place in 1998, will serve as a model for the new modality of water distribution, under the governance of the private sector, which is underway not only in the state of Rio de Janeiro, but throughout the whole of the country. Brazil. To achieve this goal, a bibliographic survey was carried out with the theoretical framework of neoliberalism, water and sustainable development, the preparation of two maps, one on the responsibility of water in each municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro and the other on the performance of Prolagos in the Região dos Lagos. The most recent reports publicly available by Prolagos and on its holding Aegea were also analyzed. The results obtained show that the management of water by a private company from a corporate and environmental point of view as it rationalizes water collection, treatment and distribution operations, in addition to ensuring water availability. However, the social aspect involved in this process is ignored, despite the vital character of water.
