SUMMARY:

Maps are present in our daily lives. You can find it in different social spaces, such as transport stations, in parks, in geolocation apps and location websites. At school, contact with maps is presented more frequently in Geography textbooks and school atlases, remaining throughout basic education.
The studies developed on School Cartography are an important field of knowledge in the formation of students to exercise citizenship, this because, the cartographic knowledge, which takes into account the cognitive development and the age group of students in basic school, thus guiding the paths for a teaching that seeks effectiveness in the teaching of Cartography. Therefore, the study of school cartography intends to assist in the formation of students capable of identifying, representing and coding the space through maps, also having as a fundamental element the use of the map as an integrating didactic resource.
The research proposes a methodology that chronologically systematizes teaching experiences that establish the use of the map as a didactic-pedagogical resource, aimed more specifically at students in the last two years of Elementary School I. For this, the proposal of a didactic sequence is given through maps mental images, use of illustrations, which present a lower degree of abstraction from reality and oblique vision, in addition to symbols and pictorial drawings. This is because, such resources can help students to understand the local reality on the geographic space, due to more playful images and content, close to concrete reality, thus, more attractive.
The research uses the works carried out at Escola Municipal Jardim Montevideo - rural area of the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, RJ - with mental maps, and with great illustrative appeal, which are established as an important didactic resource to be used during the delivery of classes of Geography in the 4th and 5th grades of elementary school. The school was and still is the only public facility under the responsibility of municipal authorities in the region. And, it is through this institution with an educational and formative function that a transformation in the life of the community can be initiated.
The proposal for the use and development of this type of map will allow the acquisition and development of cartographic skills throughout the final years of the first segment of elementary school. Based on the National Curricular Parameters of 1997, it is emphasized that the student's reality starts to be understood from his place of belonging, the space of everyday life. Consequently, by understanding what the place is in the geographic space, the student can acquire knowledge about the geography and history of his community in a more motivated way, by realizing the numerous spatial relationships present in his daily life.
