This work, entitled "Samba Schools in Intendente: The Presence of Women in the Carnival of Rio's Suburbs," aims to highlight female participation in the context of samba schools and identify the groups within the access groups that parade along Estrada Intendente Magalhães, known as the "people's walkway." The interest in addressing this topic stemmed from my work as a visual artist, who has been conducting research since 2016, through photography and dialogue with event participants and audiences in the parade area. During Carnival, Intendente Magalhães becomes a meeting point for the plurality of groups from different neighborhoods and other cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro, constituting a moment of celebration of a year-long journey of experiences and work that encompasses several aspects: the conception, execution, maintenance, and artistic production of various segments. To prepare this dissertation, the research project adopted various methodological investigation procedures, namely: a qualitative approach, through the review of existing bibliographies, data collection from relevant institutions, research of archival photographs, field research with interviews, and photographic work in the parade assembly and preparation area. The main theoretical arguments are anchored in the following references: geographer Geny Ferrreira Guimarães's considerations on the concept of place and Black heritage are relevant; Milton Santos's reflection is based on the notion of used territory and the epistemology of existence; historian Beatriz Nascimento's concept of quilombo and samba school; and author Leda Maria Martins's concepts of spiral time and oralitura. These issues, due to their great breadth and diversity, will not be addressed in their entirety, but rather through the inclusion and movement of the associations in the access group parade, and through the testimonies and photographs, prioritizing the 2024/2025 biennium. The research aims to contribute to the involvement of some questions and reflections about cultural production, the occupation of the city by samba schools that perform in the access group, highlighting the centrality of the female and black presence in the carnival of the Rio suburbs.
