The concept of place: an analysis of contents of local geography in elementary education in Duque de Caxias

The present work discusses an analysis of the concept of place in the Geography teaching, taking as an analysis the city of Duque de Caxias, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, inside Baixada Fluminense region. This research had as a main objective comprehend how the concept of place is shown .In the schools of the city of Duque de Caxias. Some bibliography summaries were made to analyse the principal ideas of concept of place, besides a review of important concepts, as the notion of the curriculum and the construction of the geographical knowledge at schools. Also, a review of the history of the city of Duque de Caxias was carried out, aiming to be contextualized in the Baixada Fluminense and in the Metropolitan Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro. In addition, inteviews were made with the active teachers who participate in the process of construction of the curriculum of the city of Duque de Caxias and also with the Geography teachers who are attending classes in the Municipal Schools.The research also explored the curriculum documents and materials built by the city council of Education of the city of Duque de Caxias. The results of this course did not assign an important discipline to the concept of place in its documents, besides not being considered policies of construction of current curricula for the teaching of Geography in municipal schools. Analysing the practice and the interviews conducted with the active teachers, it is concluded that the main current of the concept of place in the schools analysed is a humanistic one.
