SUMMARY:

The respiratory system is responsible for ensuring gas exchange with the environment, through the entry of air into the lungs during the process of respiratory mechanics. Their air inside lungs or venous oxygen and carbon dioxide is eliminated by pressure differences. Oxygen is transported with the aid of hemoglobin to the different tissues where respiration takes place inside cells, allowing the maintenance of life. When the natural process of respiratory mechanics does’t occur, it is possible to provide a supply through a ventilator that needs to be adjusted to work synchronously with the system physiology, in order to avoid lung damage, atrophy or diaphragmatic injury. With this, the aims of this work is to address the physiological bases of breath control during mechanical ventilation, highlighting ventilatory mechanics, anatomical and physiological dead space as well as gas transport; having as specific objectives: (1) To present the anatomical division of the respiratory system and the behavior of mucus during the dehydration process; (2) Describe the respiratory mechanics and the distribution of ventilation in the system; (3) Describe the anatomical and physiological dead space; (4) Address the Bohr Effect and the Bohr integration during gas transport; (5) Discuss the physiological control of breathing during mechanical ventilation and the main causes of dyssynchrony between the patient and the device.
