SUMMARY:

The study of Cenozoic tectonics in the state of Rio de Janeiro is generally correlated to the rift system of southeastern Brazil (Serra do Mar Rifts by Almeida (1977), Southeastern Brazilian Taphrogenic Basin System by Melo et al. (1985) or Southeastern Brazilian Continental Rift by Riccomini (1991) and, more recently, the Southeastern Brazilian Cenozoic Rift System (Zalan & Oliveira, 2005). One of the difficulties of the studies carried out in other areas is the lack of Cenozoic sediments that can indicate the relative age of the deformation.

The importance of investigating rutile tectonics in the onshore portions in a systematic way is justified by the implications that these structures may have on the evolution of offshore oil basins. Certainly, such research will bring scientific contributions, whether in understanding the tectonics associated or not with the established regional framework, but above all, it could contribute to understanding the influence of modern tectonic features on the oil system of the Campos and Santos basins. The facts discussed above are considered fundamental and are the basis for this master's thesis project in the context of Cenozoic rutile deformation. The research aims to compose the hierarchy of rutile deformation before and after the alkaline magmatism present in the chosen region, as well as to compare them with the existing regional framework. The dissertation's study area was expanded to include the São João River and Macaé River basins, which are the basis for the morphometric analyses. Thus, the study area is made up of the municipalities of Rio das Ostras, Macaé, Casemiro de Abreu and part of the municipalities of Cachoeira de Macacu, Nova Friburgo and Silva Jardim. This region is home to the Morro de São João Alkaline Massif (Cretaceous-Paleocene), which will serve as the basis for determining the younger tectonic structures that affected this intrusive body.

The general objective of the dissertation is to identify and hierarchize the rutile structuring of the region, together with geomorphic indicators, and to compose the picture of Cenozoic rutile deformation and compare it with the correlated tectonic events described in the literature so far. Within the framework of the investigation of rutile deformation, the aim is to use the following parameters: (a) application of geomorphological indices; (b) characterization and morphometric description of the basins of the São João and Macaé rivers; (c) establishment of the relationship between tectonic geomorphology and structural analysis; (d) development of a structural tectonic model in the area.
