SUMMARY:

The study area is located between the municipalities of Lima Duarte and Santa Rita do Ibitipoca, southeast of the State of Minas Gerais (Ibitipoca State Park - MG), it is a region that shows strong evidence of Cenozoic tectonic deformations. The Serra de Ibitipoca comprises the tectono-stratigraphic unit, called the Andrelândia Group (Mantiqueira Province), formed by quartzites and folded gneisses of Neoproterozoic age (EBERT 1956; NUMMER 1992), whose first studies show fault systems that control the terrain morphology . So far, existing research in this region has focused on the occurrence of caves and grottoes, without any analysis of brittle tectonics as one of the causes for relief control. The importance of research such as that promoted in this Project lies in understanding the role of Cenozoic tectonics in the evolution of the relief system and the associated erosion processes, the causes of the organization of the drainage network, the control of possible Quaternary sedimentation sites and, moreover, the distribution and concentration of lithospheric tectonic tensions in the domain of this portion of the Brazilian intraplate. The Ibitipoca State Park, in this sense, has peculiar characteristics such as, for example, the relief in quartzite arranged in structural heights (Morro da Lombada at an altitude of 1,784m and the peaks of Ibitipoca and Pião at 1,722m), the steep slope and the occurrences of waterfalls, rapids and caves in quartzites, which makes the region a scientific attraction to prove the recent tectonic activity in the region. The proposed project aims to systematically analyze the Cenozoic tectonic context of the region, based on the integration of geological-structural data of faults and fractures and aerogeophysical (magnetometric). Structural data comprise fault attitudes, fractures and kinematic indicators, in addition, of course, to field relationships, which have already been obtained and make up the existing structural database in this region. These data will be integrated with analyzes from magnetometric data (Project n. 3023 – CPRM/CODEMIG), which aims to recognize structural features that can support studies on Cenozoic tectonics. In order to understand the evolution of relief, a basic premise of morphostructural analyses, it will be possible to describe the influences of structures in the subsurface and on the surface in the evolution of the relief and the influences on the drainage system.
