SUMMARY:

The Late Cretaceous and Paleogene were notable for intense magmatic activity in southeast Brazil. In Campos and Santos basins, post-breakup magmatism is characterized as extrusive and intrusive alkaline associations. These episodes are contemporaneous to important magmatic events in southeast Brazil. Part of this activity is observed in the Poços de Caldas-Cabo Frio Aligment (onshore) and Vitória-Trindade Chain (offshore) (e.g. Chang et al., 1992; Thomaz Filho and Rodrigues, 1999; Moreira et al., 2006; Alves, 2006). The genetic link between these events, though, is still uncertain.
One of the hypotheses, supported by Thompson et al. (1998), suggests a migrating plume source for Poços de Caldas-Cabo Frio, Serra do Mar and Vitória-Trindade Chain alkaline magmatism. Conversely, another thesis supports the idea of a fixed hot spot associated with South American plate motion and clockwise rotation (Thomaz Filho and Rodrigues, 1999, Thomaz Filho et al., 2005; Thomaz Filho et al., 2008). Non-plume-related theories, though, associate this continental alkaline magmatism with tectonic reactivation of major faults and structures (Almeida, 1983).
Magmatic episodes in sedimentary basins provide important energy amounts during a short time. Consequently, chemical and physical modifications are expected to affect depositional environments (Oreiro, 2006). When associated with hydrocarbon systems, these events play essential roles in their development (generation, migration and accumulation) and constitute key elements for sedimentary basins exploration (Thomaz Filho et al. 2008).
In Campos Basin, for instance, Cabiúnas fractured basalts are important hydrocarbon reservoirs for Bandejo and Linguado fields (Mohriak et al., 1990; Thomaz Filho et al. 2008). Nevertheless, given its relevance to the Brazilian oil and gas exploration industry, the Cabo Frio High area magmatic expressions still lack further petrogenetic data and studies.
