SUMMARY:

Urban growth is becoming an increasing concern as cities grow in population and expand
their borders. Moreover, population growth, combined with economic development, is
estimated to increase urban areas between 1.2-1.8 million km² from 2000 to 2030 (SETO et
al., 2012; GÜNERALP and SETO, 2013; MCDONALD et al., 2018). A study by the
Brazilian Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA, 2022), based on data from the
Censuses and the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) conducted by the Brazilian
Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), shows that the Brazilian urban population
accounted for about 55.9% of the total in 1970. This proportion rose to 86.3% in 2020. In this
sense, the specialization of human, economic, and social activities is concentrated in cities
and the fields of coexistence of different cultures and social classes (CENGIZ, 2022). Along
with these characteristics, concerns arise regarding rampant urban expansion in area and
population and the adverse physical consequences of this growth, known as "urban sprawl."
Given these issues, this project proposes to evaluate urban sprawl and the growth of
paramilitary groups (militias) in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and its effects on deforestation
caused by irregular occupation led by organized crime. The Metropolitan Region of Rio de
Janeiro (RMRJ), the second largest metropolitan region in Brazil in terms of population,
presents significant challenges in urban expansion and criminality. This study seeks to
understand the factors that led to the expansion of this urban mesh and whether criminality,
one of the region's main problems, can be one of the vectors of deforestation. The analysis
will focus on the urban area of the city of RJ, understanding the factors that led to the
extension of this mesh, as well as its effects on the use of urban land in the state of Rio de
Janeiro. Considering the increasing use of remote sensing and Geographic Information
Systems (GIS), the project sought to assess the state of the art of literature regarding the use
of these methods for urban sprawl. Preliminary results show that academia sought to evaluate
urban growth, but with a gap in the issue of criminality as one of the vectors. Therefore, the
research will use these methods to critically assess the determinants related to urban sprawl,
including analyzing the vector paramilitary groups and considering the socioeconomic
variables already assessed by specialized literature. The results of this spatial evaluation of the
effects of criminality within the city of RJ may assist in its prospective urban planning and in
formulating public policies for maintaining standing forests.
