SUMMARY:

The purpose of this project is to analyze the economy of the state of Rio de Janeiro based on the Kaldorian interpretation. According to the Kaldorian argument, exports, especially of high and medium technological intensity products, play a key role in the long-term dynamics of economies. The literature review of the demand-driven economic growth model developed by Kaldor during the 1970s associated with regional development theories provides theoretical support for the hypothesis that the growth of exports from the state of Rio de Janeiro observed in recent years did not follow Kaldorian logic. Considering the central characteristics that singularized the performance of exports in the state of Rio de Janeiro during the period from 2002 to 2017, the preliminary analysis carried out evidences that the export guideline of the state of Rio de Janeiro has focused on mineral extraction production while the other sectors have been showing a drop in the participation in the export guideline. The oil sector is responsible for the state trade balance surpluses with subsequent increase in the share of the national aggregate product. However, the oil activity has not been able to generate chains to the other sectors necessary to diversify the state of Rio de Janeiro’s export agenda and induce the competitiveness of its product in international trade. Moreover, due to the low technological content of the products included in this sector, the long-term growth of the state of Rio de Janeiro may be compromised. Public policies aimed at thickening and diversifying the production chain in the state of Rio de Janeiro are becoming urgent.
