ABSTRACT

PAIVA, Carlos Henrique Vale de. The Construction of a Thematic Digital Repository: A Photographic Record of Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic. 120p Master's Thesis in Digital Humanities. Multidisciplinary Institute-Nova Iguaçu. Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, 2024.

At the end of 2019, the world was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic, an event that exposed deep social and economic disparities, significantly affecting work relationships and conditions. This phenomenon underscored the importance of work and essential workers. The present research is set against this backdrop, aiming to investigate the role of work and workers during the health crisis. Initially, the study examined the work context during the pandemic, incorporating a theoretical discussion that encompasses the history of work and workers, social memory, and digital preservation from the perspective of digital humanities, its practices, and applications. Subsequently, photographic collections documenting this period were selected for the construction of a thematic repository. The goals of this research include: theoretically contributing to the definition and universalization of the concept of work and essential workers; preserving workers' memory; supporting future research through an imagery perspective; and enriching the collection of the Documentation and Image Center of the Multidisciplinary Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. The employed methodology was based on bibliographic research, consulting books, journals, manuals, treaties, and online articles. The collection and selection of images were conducted through an inductive approach, using keywords related to the research theme. It concludes that, despite being recognized as essential in adverse historical moments, essential workers often do not receive the value and visibility they deserve. There is a marked discrepancy in the treatment of these workers between countries in the Global North and South, highlighting the need to reevaluate and revalue the role of these individuals in society.
