SUMMARY:

This research investigates the dynamics of the dissemination of true and false news on digital social networks, focusing on the mechanisms that drive the spread of misinformation. Based on a theoretical review that covers the evolution from early forms of digital sociability, such as Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), to the consolidation of social networks and Web 2.0, the study contextualizes the transformation from physical to digital public spaces, highlighting contemporary challenges related to post-truth and content virality. Employing the epidemiological SEIR model (Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered), adapted to simulate information circulation in multilayer complex networks, the study conducts a computational experiment analyzing the comparative behavior of false and true news within a simulated network of one million users. The results reveal distinct propagation patterns influenced by emotional factors, recommendation algorithms, and bot activity, which increase the complexity of the digital informational ecosystem. This research contributes to understanding current informational dynamics and emphasizes the importance of integrated strategies involving media literacy education, algorithmic regulation, and public policies to strengthen social resilience against misinformation, fostering a more ethical, inclusive, and transparent digital environment.
