The forgotten role of radioactivity in the teaching of atomic
structure in schools of the state school system in Rio de Janeiro: Elaboration and
application of a Didactic Sequence

SUMMARY:
This dissertation makes a bibliographic review of the approach given to the theme of
radioactivity in the study of atomic structure, analyzes the changes in the chemistry
curriculum of state schools in Rio de Janeiro in the last two decades and proposes a didactic
sequence as a possibility for the teaching of radioactivity. The literature review was made in
the Databases of Google Scholar and SciELO using as keywords Radioactivity, Chemistry
Teaching and Atomic Structure. Papers published between 2000 and 2020 in Portuguese
were prioritized. In the analysis of the curricula implemented by the State Department of
Education of Rio de Janeiro, the curricula of the period 2000 to 2012 were considered, taking
into account the changes made in this period to adapt to external evaluation systems. Despite
attempts to improve the high school curriculum, including the chemistry curriculum, we
were unable to observe any significant improvement. We identified, in this literature review,
that there is rather an effort of the chemistry teaching community to approximate the
radioactivity of the study of the evolution of atomic models, but we still consider such
initiatives timid. We also verified the search for alternatives in different states of the
federation for the teaching of radioactivity, without, however, being able to conclude that
there is an improvement in the acceptance/understanding of radioactivity with positive
impact on society. We propose a didactic sequence sustained in the Nature of Science and
divided into three moments, namely, a form, the reading of a scientific article and a video,
associated with two wheels of conversation.
