SUMMARY:

Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICTs), and especially the mobile phone, appear to be devices that permeate social life across different age groups, including young people and adolescents, who seem to spend a large part of their day connected to their phones. Reflecting on the role of education in this context means rethinking the way human relationships are being shaped within this global culture, characterized by hyperreality. Considering the school context, to what extent are leisure practices impacted, perceived, and experienced in the present moment by ninth-grade students in elementary education at a public school in the Maré community, in the city of Rio de Janeiro? And how can Physical Education, through education for leisure, contribute to the reflection, expansion, and appreciation of leisure experiences, both within and beyond the school walls? The objectives of this research are to analyze the repercussions of a pedagogical intervention in education for leisure, investigating students’ conceptions, experiences, interests, and social conditions regarding leisure and the use of DICTs; to (re)create bodily practices or other leisure-related interests, developing critical and creative capacities; and to analyze changes in students’ perceptions of leisure resulting from the pedagogical intervention. This research will follow a descriptive qualitative approach, as it aims to describe, analyze, and understand meanings, values, motivations, aspirations, attitudes, and opinions about leisure, taking into account the socio-historical context through dialectical hermeneutics. Participatory research will be used as the reference method, enabling the co-participation of the agents involved, which makes collective protagonism concrete and stimulating, especially with regard to students’ thinking, relating, and awareness-raising concerning the demands and claims associated with leisure. Through the dialogue between the conception of leisure established as a reference in the study and the students’ knowledge and experiences, it is expected that the definition of leisure can be constructed and (re)signified. This may enable the development of reflective, critical, and creative attitudes that contribute to a better understanding of the conditions involved in leisure time both inside and outside the school community.
