SUMMARY:

Youth and Adult Education (EJA) is an educational achievement formalized in the 1988 Federal Constitution and in the National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDB) No. 9,394/96, aimed at individuals who were unable to complete their studies in the formal education system during the expected school-age years. However, what we observe in Youth and Adult Education are alarming rates of absenteeism and dropout. Since Physical Education is also a mandatory curricular component of this modality, it is necessary for its teachers to have a clear understanding of the occurrence of this social problem so that, in addition to complying with the legal requirement to encourage this population to remain in school, students’ social realities and the contexts in which they are situated are also considered, discussed, and taken into account—so that, when classes are developed with these students, they are meaningful and significant. This study presents Physical Education teachers with pedagogical possibilities for Physical Education classes in Youth and Adult Education, through an intervention aimed at reducing the gap between lessons and students’ realities, bringing students into a leading role in their educational process and thereby reducing school dropout. The research is characterized as participatory research in which, based on a theoretical framework and an educational resource, interventions were carried out to address qualitative aspects reported by the study participants. A focus group was used as the data-collection instrument, and the Dialectical Hermeneutics technique was employed to analyze the data obtained. As a result, the study offers teachers contributions toward more democratic classes, thus encouraging the active participation of learners.
