SUMMARY:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1 in 36 children and is frequently associated with significant deficits in psychomotor development, including difficulties in motor coordination, balance, laterality, and body perception. Although adapted martial arts have emerged as a promising intervention strategy, there is a scarcity of systematic evidence regarding their effectiveness on the psychomotor development of children with ASD. The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review on the effects of adapted martial arts on the psychomotor development of children with ASD and to propose an evidence-based intervention protocol. A systematic review will be conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches were carried out in the SciSpace and PubMed/MEDLINE databases, as well as in Grey Literature (Google Scholar), using terms related to ASD, combat sports/martial arts, and psychomotor development. Experimental and quasi-experimental studies involving children aged 4-16 diagnosed with ASD, which evaluated adapted martial arts interventions and their effects on psychomotor development, were included. Two independent reviewers will perform the study selection and data extraction. Methodological quality will be assessed using appropriate tools for each study design. Two studies that met the inclusion criteria have already been identified, totaling approximately 52 participants. Yip (2019) demonstrated significant improvements in bilateral and body coordination after 4 weeks of martial arts with obstacle courses in 10 children with ASD. Morales et al. (2022) found significant improvements in motor skills and psychosocial behaviors after 6 months of adapted judo. Both studies presented important methodological limitations, including small sample sizes and the absence of adequate control groups. As a result, this study intends to contribute to teacher training and the implementation of more inclusive practices within the school context, strengthening the role of Physical Education as a promoter of inclusion and comprehensive human development. By valuing martial arts as adaptable and meaningful pedagogical content, the aim is to expand the possibilities for neurodivergent students to participate in classes, respecting their specificities and promoting coexistence with other students.
