Continuing education for Physical Education teachers: the BNCC and the Carioca Curriculum in action at the 8th Regional Education Coordination Office of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro

The BNCC is a normative document that defines essential learning for Brazilian students, while the Carioca Curriculum is specific to the city of Rio de Janeiro. This study aims to investigate the continuing education of Physical Education teachers assigned to schools of the 8th Regional Education Coordination Office of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The objective is to identify to what extent these teachers have access to continuing education on the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and the Carioca Physical Education Curriculum and its repercussions on educational practices. As a specific objective, we will seek to investigate whether teachers recognize the BNCC and the Carioca Curriculum as guiding pedagogical work and analyze what type of continuing education they received after the Covid-19 pandemic. The investigation focuses on the 8th CRE, which covers 188 schools and operates in the north and west zones of Rio de Janeiro, areas with high population density. The research will involve the participation of Physical Education teachers who work in full-time or part-time schools in the 8th CRE. The selection criteria for participants include: teachers with more than three years of teaching experience and affiliation with the municipal public education system with a maximum of 30 years of teaching experience. The research will be quantitative, qualitative and descriptive in nature, using standardized data collection instruments with statistical treatment, including measures of central tendency, dispersion and relative and absolute frequency. From a qualitative point of view, we will use content analysis. With this research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of the continuing education needs of Physical Education teachers and identify possible gaps between the training offered and the demands of the curriculum, supporting more effective public policies for improving the quality of Physical Education in schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
