SUMMARY:

This work aims to evaluate the feasibility of using glass microsphere waste, in combination with metakaolin, as precursor materials in the synthesis of geopolymers through alkaline activation processes, aiming at the formation of a geopolymer gel with potential for technological application. Metakaolin is adopted as a reference precursor, widely consolidated in the literature, while glass microspheres, used in different percentages in the formulations, are investigated as a partial or complementary alternative, due to their high silica (SiO₂) content and predominantly amorphous character.

The research is part of the search for sustainable alternatives to Portland cement, whose production is associated with high energy consumption and significant carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. In this scenario, geopolymers stand out as promising materials, especially when produced from industrial waste rich in aluminosilicates, contributing to the reduction of environmental impacts and the valorization of waste, in line with the principles of the circular economy. Methodologically, the study encompasses the compositional, structural, and morphological characterization of metakaolin and glass microsphere residue using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The research is developed within the framework of a Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) and the Brazilian Navy, ensuring the controlled supply of the residue and strengthening the integration between the university and the public-industrial sector.
