PPGCTA Presentation
Establishment: The Postgraduate Program in Food Science and Technology (PPGCTA) was established in 1976 with a Master's degree in Food Science and Technology, being the first of its kind in the state of
Rio de Janeiro.
In 2005, CAPES accredited its Doctoral program, and the Postgraduate Studies of the Department of Food Technology – DTA/UFRRJ solidified into the Postgraduate Program in Food Science and Technology
(PPGCTA) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro.
Mission: To train excellent human resources to meet the demands and capitalize on the potential of the food sector, contributing to the sustainable regional development of the state of Rio de Janeiro, with a
focus on the Baixada Fluminense region.
Vision: To be a national and international reference in research and the training of postgraduates in Food Science and Technology, recognized for its social, scientific, and technological impact in the
Baixada Fluminense and the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Faculty: The PPGCTA faculty comprises professionals with qualifications, training, and experience compatible with the Program's areas of concentration and research lines. The Program's faculty is
multidisciplinary and consists of 14 permanent professors and 2 collaborating professors, including professors from UFRRJ's Department of Food Technology (DTA), professors from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), and researchers from Embrapa
Food Agroindustry – CTAA.
Students: The student body, renewed annually, consists of professionals from various fields including Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Nutrition, Agronomy, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering,
Pharmacy, Chemistry, Gastronomy, among others. It's worth highlighting the significant number of international students in the PPGCTA. Traditionally, students from Peru constitute the largest group,
but students from other Latin American countries (Colombia, Cuba, and Honduras), Africa (Mozambique and Angola), and even Asia (Syria) are current or former students of the Program. All research lines
and projects within the PPGCTA include the participation of undergraduate students, with or without scientific initiation scholarships.
Alumni: Based on an update conducted in 2025 with the Program's alumni (59 responses, students graduated between 2020 and 2024), the assessment is as follows:
 * a) Of the 59 alumni who responded to the form, 50.84% reported being employed (33.33% in the private sector and 66.66% in the public sector).
 * b) Out of a total of 51 students who defended their Master's in the PPGCTA during this four-year period, 16 continued as our students in the Doctorate program (31.37%). Another 4 students pursued
their Doctorates at other institutions. Additionally, 6 doctoral alumni are currently post-doctoral fellows in the Program.
 * c) Based on responses obtained through forms and research conducted on the Lattes Curricula of the alumni, it is observed that 65.90% of a total of 88 graduated students (alumni 2020 – 2024)
are working in the field of Food Science and Technology, including doctoral and post-doctoral students.
