SUMMARY:

This dissertation seeks to analyze how Brazilian agribusiness constructs and strengthens its food narrative, based on the concept of food security, as a way to legitimize its political political action and reinforce its importance for the country. Based on discourse analysis and the construction of social problems, the research investigates how food security emerges emerges as a referential for the food debate. It examines how food security was constructed in the global context through the influence of international agencies and and large agri-food corporations, and is associated with the promotion of an international development project led by the United States of America. In Brazil, if on the one hand the notion of food security was initially appropriated by civil society, on the other, actors of the so-called agribusiness soon began to mobilize the term. In 1993, the recently created Associação Brasileira do Agronegócio (ABAG), the first association of agribusiness in the country, launched the book "Food Security - An Agribusiness Approach". Agribusiness Approach", in which food safety was listed as the main social responsibility of the sector. In this sense, the work analyzes how the consolidation of agribusiness in Brazil was closely linked to the construction of a discursive apparatus of legitimation for the sector, in which food security appears as one of its main elements. ABAG is used as a case study in order to identify how the entity mobilizes and and constructs the discourse of food security, highlighting its relevance to the construction of the concept in the Brazilian construction of the concept in the Brazilian public sphere, its relationship with the international its importance for the consolidation of agribusiness in Brazil.
