SUMMARY:

The term “Comida de Verdade” or “Real Food” was brought in the V Conferência Nacional de Segurança
Alimentar e Nutricional (Fifth National Conference for Food and Nutritional Safety) held in Brasilia, in
2015, that had as motto “True Food in Fields and Cities: for rights and sovereignty”. This term is
considered a politic term, for its origin is deeply attached in the administration of the popular
organizations of the organized civil society. More than ever, the promotion of production, access and
consumption of “True Food” shows itself as an indispensable strategy against social, economic and
environmental challenges of the hegemonic food supplying system. With that, the elementary goal of the
presented thesis is to analyze how the “True Food” experiences (local community knowledge), located in
the city of Belém do Pará, contribute to local food supplying, even in the face of a scenario of coexistence
of different food systems conflicting for supply in the locality. To accomplish that, we aim to identify the
points of distinction between the popular local experiences in food supplying and the hegemonic food
supplying system. The popular participation, the popular organizations and the local actors’ strategies are
fundamental pillars in this research development. Opening the thesis, we firstly comprehend the
conception of what is “True Food”, and how the concept is being designed by the local community.
Proceeding, the analysis for how the city food supplying develops itself takes place, as well for the social
relations that permeate the activity. Beyond that, this study will analyze where the popular knowledge and
experience locate in this playing field, revealing social resistances for local food supplying. On the third
part of this study, we’ll address specifically case studies, as to better understand what are the true
dimensions of what is “Real Food”. In that matter, the True Food concept can cover significant concepts
and claims, resulting in a variety of voices in the concern. Methodologically, this study is a qualitative
research, and as the research technique, the semi structured interview with closed questionaries will be
used, the same used in the research “Comida de verdade: caminhos para acesso aos alimentos durante a
pandemia” made by the Instituto Brasileiro de Defesa do Consumidor (IDEC) in 2020. The relevance of
the study is justified by the need for conceptualization of the term “Comida de Verdade” or “Real Food”
and, yet, by the pertinence of contributing for the visibility and survival of the social organizations.
Finally, it has been noted by preliminary researches that the Conferences for Food and Nutricional Safety
are a key achievement in the public policy in the food and nutrition areas in Brazil, as well for the
development of the concept of “Real Food”.
