A series of agricultural changes can be seen in the last three decades when observing the areas of former occupation in Rio Grande do Sul by large cattle ranches. In place of extensively exploited native fields, in many parts, soybean crops, storage silos, cultivated pastures and plantations along the roadside are emerging. These are some of 

the most visible signs when crossing the Campanha region, which is in the southwest of the state. By living personally and academically with this reality, I ended up formulating some questions. Is historically extensive livestock becoming intensive? What do landlords and ranchers have to do with these changes? How are workers involved in this scenario? In this thesis research proposal, in preparation, my objective is to analyze the changes in the social relations of production that permeate the ranches and the creation of beef cattle in the southwest of Rio Grande do Sul between 1985 and 2019. Based on the theoretical principles of the political economy of agrarian changes, in Henry Bernstein, and in studies on capitalism in Brazilian agriculture, in Guilherme Delgado, I was led to reflect on two fundamental issues: a) productive intensification as a symptom of the appropriation of capitalized income from land in areas of former agricultural occupation; b) the overexploitation of work as a consequence of the dependent external insertion of the Brazilian economy in face of the reprimarization of its foreign trade. In order to study these issues with regard specifically to ranches and livestock in the Southwest of Rio Grande do Sul, I began by reviewing the specialized literature on an acute phase of transformations in rural patronage and in production systems that began between the years 1980 and 1990. As a balance of this theoretical balance, I tried to conceptually develop the notion of ranching economy as a guide for observing the transformations taking place in recent decades. The continuity of this research will follow a predominantly quantitative methodological design, in the collection of agricultural and agrarian information in a series of surveys, censuses and reports. In the analysis of this information, I will seek to measure the reconfigurations that took place from a thematic cut between: a) ranching economy and rural patronage; b) mesoregional production matrix and technical base for livestock; c) labor market.
