SUMMARY:

The biodiversity of the state of Amazonas is one of the world's greatest natural assets. It is estimated that around 10% of the planet's known species are concentrated in the Amazon, making it one of the richest regions in terms of global biodiversity. The state of Amazonas holds the largest portion of the Amazon rainforest among the states that make up the Legal Amazon.

With the vast expanse of the Amazon rainforest, the state has a unique potential for transforming natural resources into innovative and sustainable products and services. The bioeconomy not only opens up new possibilities for generating jobs and income, but also promotes the internalization of economic development and values the traditional knowledge of local communities. The relevance of this approach goes beyond the local economy, as it responds to growing global demands for sustainable solutions. The research therefore seeks to answer the central question: “What are the opportunities, possibilities and obstacles of bioeconomic activities in the state of Amazonas?”.

The dissertation is structured in three main chapters, in addition to the introduction and conclusion. In the first chapter, entitled “Bioeconomy”, the central concept of the topic is presented, with a theoretical approach that explores its characteristics, divisions and relevance on the global and local stage. The initial section defines the bioeconomy and its groups of activities, while the second section discusses its relationship with sustainable development, highlighting its importance for Brazil and, more specifically, for the state of Amazonas. This chapter provides the theoretical basis needed to understand how the bioeconomy can be a transformative strategy for the region.
