SUMMARY:

This thesis focuses on the knowledge production about food sovereignty and food and nutrition security (SSAN) by indigenous peoples, highlighting the importance of indigenous women in this process. Indigenous women are primarily responsible for food processes and the transmission of ancestral knowledge, so the research discusses their locus of enunciation in the production of knowledge. We carried out a bibliographical review on the subject, highlighting the productions of indigenous authors and their conceptions. Thus, the research adopts the concept of “territory-body-spirit” as an epistemological lens for understanding food sovereignty, where food is not only understood as a consumer good, but as a vital element that interacts with the physical, cultural and spiritual dimensions of indigenous peoples. The thesis was developed during the Covid-19 pandemic, leading us to discuss the impacts and autonomous strategies of indigenous peoples to guarantee their food security. In addition, we carried out fieldwork with indigenous families from the Indigenous Cultural Association of the State of Roraima (KAPOI), focusing on the meanings given by indigenous communities in an urban context. The indigenous perspectives on food sovereignty makes significant contributions to the field by integrating the symbolic and spiritual dimensions into the understanding of food, re-signifying the concept of SSAN and broadening the possibilities for reflection on the food autonomy of indigenous peoples, even in urban contexts. Thus, this research proposes a critical and in-depth reading of food and food sovereignty, as something that transcends the nutritional dimension, affirming it as an integral right that involves not only the body, but also the territory and the spirit.
