SUMMARY:

This study focuses on the relationship between the growing interest of investment funds in land and commodity production and the productive restructuring of the Brazilian forestry sector. It is situated within the context of the expansion of Brazilian agribusiness and agroindustry, in connection with the debate on the appropriation of land and natural resources in the country by foreign actors. The research assumes that the raw materials of the forestry sector are embedded in the bioeconomy due to their multiple and flexible uses, which makes them highly attractive to investors. The production of flex crops grants mobility to the capital invested in land, since the goods generated from this type of cultivation are capable of reaching alternative markets, counteracting the low liquidity typically associated with land investments. We discuss the participation of companies known as Timber Investment Management Organizations (TIMOs), whose role is to identify, analyze, acquire, and manage forest assets that best meet the needs of their clients—pension funds, endowments, public pension systems, and high–net worth individuals. We seek to understand the new dynamics of capitalism in rural areas in the context of an increasingly financialized economy. In this sense, the research examines the appropriation of nature by financial capital and by large corporations through the production of tree monocultures, and contributes to understanding how the relationship between territory and financial capital constitutes a project of spatial reconfiguration driven by the dynamics of globalized capital, with investment funds, especially TIMOs, acting as key agents in territorial appropriation and in the reconfiguration of land use and production. To this end, we draw upon theoretical approaches on land appropriation processes, the financialization of rural spaces, and the formation of the Brazilian forestry sector, along with the collection of secondary statistical data.
