SUMMARY:

This research focuses on the phenomenon of the Pilgrimages of the Waters and the Land in the Rio Doce Basin (PWLRDB), employing ethnographic research to comprehend how individuals involved in organizing this pilgrimage construct the social both within and beyond of the network of individuals and “churchgoer” movements directly engaged. The study also aims to investigate if and how they shape political-religious identities, both for those amidst the multitude of pilgrims and for those on the sidelines witnessing the pilgrimage unfold. Since its inaugural edition in 2016, the PWLRDB has taken place annually in a parish within one of the dioceses of the Rio Doce Basin. While these pilgrimages follow a tradition of pilgrimages organized by the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) in Minas Gerais, they have the distinctiveness of bringing together other organizations within the Catholic Church, as well as other churches and movements, in their organization. The pilgrimages articulate a discourse advocating for life and confronting mining in the aftermath of the dam rupture in Mariana, MG. In the course of this investigation, to highlight the diverse understandings of what faith and politics are (or should be), the emphasis will be placed on the internal and external disputes within the pilgrimage for framing these categories. To achieve this, by seeking connections, disjunctions, and flows, I participated in and observed events related to the pre-pilgrimage, pilgrimage, and post-pilgrimage phases of the 5th and 6th editions of the PWLRDB, respectively held in Conceição do Mato Dentro, MG, and the district of Regência, Linhares, ES.
