“Just live and plant and you own it.” This statement, made by a rural worker at an assembly in Campo Alegre, reveals a certainty that, although it does not resonate as a foundation of Brazilian land policy, seems to resonate as a mantra that seeks to strengthen and encourage actions linked to staying on the land. In five centuries of existence, Brazil has accumulated facts, actors and institutions that have contributed, almost permanently, to the design of an unequal reality, constituted by a high concentration of land and a continuous process of discrimination and marginalization of the peasant sector. Contrary to this reality, collective experiences persist demanding agrarian reform, resisting long processes of conflict and negotiation with the public sphere. In this direction and with the intention of contributing to the production of knowledge and debate on the agrarian issue in Baixada Fluminense, this research project aims to investigate the resistance strategies used in an area of rural occupation in the region, how these enable territorialization, access and permanence on earth. The research seeks to investigate the place occupied by women in confronting the social and power structure, created with the unequal distribution of land. Women who, in the lands of Rio de Janeiro, the scene of countless adversities, with their agency, challenge the social system, create possibilities for change, work, mobilize, organize, articulate and fight for a plot, a space normally dedicated to production, but which in these lands, Furthermore, and as a priority, it ensures a place to live.
