The present work aims to identify the contributions of Geography and Social Sciences to the debate about the notion of rural. To reach this objective, a theoretical survey was carried out on the meanings attributed to the notion, observing which concepts and notions are articulated in both Geography and Social Sciences. After this first stage, eight doctoral theses from two postgraduate programs were analyzed, four in Geography (Human Geography - USP) and four in Social Sciences (CPDA-UFRRJ), between the years 2000-2020. From the reading of these theses and the completion of reading sheets, it was observed how the notion of rural is defined and operationalized in these works. The objective was to try to understand the main questions that have been raised in these studies, pointing to possible approximations or distinctions between the two areas. It was found in the theses the characteristics of the new rural in locations in the South and Southeast regions, such as the pluriactivity and multifunctionality of agriculture, mainly associated with rural tourism, as described by the theoretical authors presented in chapter 1. No specific ways of operating the notion of rural in each science, but rather a dialogue between authors and concepts of the two disciplines. Despite this, it was also possible to verify that the two sciences have their own debates and speak from their key concepts, but these concepts dialogue with each other and the authors tend to seek which one is best suited to observing their reality of study.
