SUMMARY:

Toxoplasmosis is a very common infection in several species of animals. Being widely distributed throughout the world, it is caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. Domestic felines are of great importance for the life cycle of Toxoplasma gondii, since, along with their feces, they carry oocysts to the environment that, under ideal environmental conditions, sporulate and contaminate other animals, including man. The manifestation of the disease is more common in immunocompromised dogs and cats, with broad symptoms and no pathognomonic signs, toxoplasmosis becomes difficult to diagnose in the veterinary clinic routine. The aim of this study is to identify T. gondii DNA, detect IgG anti-T. gondii, to investigate possible laboratory findings (blood count and biochemistry) and risk factors in dogs and cats treated at clinics located in the city of São José dos Campos-SP. The samples will be collected from whole blood samples from the Laboratórios Vetvale Centro de Diagnóstico e Especialidades Veterinárias Ltda, and Baldacin Salgado Serviços Veterinários S/S Ltda ME, both located in the municipality of São José dos Campo - SP. The analyzes will be carried out from the blood and serum of 200 animals, 100 dogs and 100 cats. From the serum and whole blood that we will have access to, the serological diagnosis will be made using the technique of Modified Agglutination Test (MAT) and molecular diagnosis of PCR, respectively, at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases UFRRJ. The blood count, serum biochemistry and risk factors data will be accessed through the records and history of the animals that will be provided for consultation by the Laboratory. The chi-square test will be used to compare the number of positive animals with risk factors and laboratory findings associated with T. gondii infection in domestic dogs and cats. This study is expected to identify the DNA of T. gondii, estimate the seroprevalence and risk factors of toxoplasmosis and possible hematological and biochemical changes in dogs and cats, thus contributing with new clinical and epidemiological data in the region studied.
