SUMMARY:

The present study aims to detect the presence of Ehrlichia spp. in peripheral blood and bone marrow in black-eared opossum (Didelphis aurita). Synanthropic animals are known to be capable of harboring infectious agents of importance in public and animal health. Due to their close proximity to peri-urban environments resulting from the deforestation of small forest niches, new studies must be established, looking for this correlation with the occurrence of diseases. Among the agents of importance in Veterinary Medicine, those belonging to the family Anaplasmataceae stand out, transmitted mainly through the blood meal of ticks such as the species Riphicephalus sanguineus. The occurrence of this infection in marsupials is described worldwide. Despite this, there are few studies that demonstrate the presence of this infectious agent in other tissues of preference, such as bone marrow. In dogs, the agent Ehrlichia spp. migrates to this hematopoietic site and promotes irreversible damage to the site, compromising the dogs' longevity by the establishment of severe cytopenias. Knowing that opossums harbor these agents in peripheral circulation, this study also seeks to investigate the presence of this in bone marrow aspirate, as well as to evaluate it cytologically. A total of 15 black-eared opossum received at the Wild Animal Screening Center - Cetas RJ, located in the municipality of Seropédica, will be included in the study. A complete physical analysis and collection of peripheral blood will be performed to perform the complete blood count. The animals will be sedated and after bone local analgesia, bone marrow collection will be performed at the proximal end of the humerus or femur. The aspirated content will be directed to the manufacture of cytological slides and subsequent storage. The samples will be subsequently analyzed through the polymerase chain reaction for the detection of Anaplasmataceae Agents (Ehrlichia spp.) and the data obtained will be subjected to statistical analysis.
