SUMMARY:

Sepsis is a organ dysfunction’s syndrome that occurs as a result of a host's upregulated response to an infection, which renal dysfunction stands out due to its high prevalence. The literature about the cause and effect of acute kidney injury (AKI) related to sepsis in dogs are fair scarce, which raises important questions about their risk factors, prognosis and management. The current literature recommends the measurement of serum creatinine as a marker for AKI, but it is already understood that it represents a late marker of renal dysfunction, being important to search for early markers of renal dysfunction and possible risk factors associated with the morbidity and mortality of patients in sepsis. The objective of this study is to evaluate, in dogs with sepsis, the prognostic value of urinalysis for a treatment of urinary dysfunction and to establish possible correlations between injury / renal dysfunction changes and the outcome of patients. The study will include patients of the canine species with suspected or confirmed infection, without chronic comorbidities or severe systemic repercussions, seen at private veterinary clinics and hospitals and at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. At the time of admission of animals that can take clinically and epidemiological, physiological variables will be found. An aliquot of venous blood and urine via cystocentesis will be collected and processed. The patient will be followed during the stabilization and treatment period for the pre-existing condition when the entire conduct is recorded and finally or the outcome. At the end of the observational period, dogs will be allocated into groups according to the presence of sepsis and outcome (surviving sepsis and sepsis deaths) and other animals (control group). The groups will be absorbed as to the presence of organic dysfunctions and clinical and laboratory changes, and compared among themselves regarding the risk factors for death. At the end of the study, it is expected to have information regarding the significance of renal dysfunction in the patient's outcome and whether urinalysis can be used as an early marker of acute kidney injury and / or renal dysfunction.
