SUMMARY:

This study has as central purpose to give contributions to historical researches related to the period of the Late Middle Ages, evocating a distinguished approach through a proposal with semiotic analysis that includes as objects the royal actants Beatrice of Castile – little-known in the Lusitanian and, especially, Brazilian historiographies – and Philippa of Lancaster, a little more studied by medievalists, despite never being observed in compared perspective. Taking as sources the Chronicle of D. Dinis and the Chronicle of D. Afonso IV, developed between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth century by Rui de Pina, the thesis analyses a royal exaltation narrative that has as principal plot the reigns of the father-in- law of the Castilian and of his husband, historically situated between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. There is, not only the necessity of comparing the investigated sources for the purpose of identifying the constancies and ruptures referring to that feminine figure, but also in what they associate (or not) with the identities attributed to the husband Afonso. Another point consists in analysing the Chronicle of D. João I – whose authorship is attributed to Fernão Lopes, Portugal’s official writer during the half of the fifteenth century – and the Chronicle of the Capture of Ceuta – composed by Lopes’ successor, Gomes Eannes de Zurara – that tell, epically, incidents occurred decades ago, when Philippa’s husband ascended the throne. Seeking, at last, to compare the Beatrice’s acting constructed by the Lusitanian chronicler during the development of his works with a detailed performance played by the actant Filipa, the research, then, intends to understand the limits that involve the delineation of a categorical profile of royal feminine personalities.
