SUMMARY:

This present research has the goal of identifying and analyzing the representation attributed to the Japanese in the Jesuit letters written during their mission on the sixteenth century. The essay will discuss how the missionaries depicted Japan through a cultural filter and the interests of the Jesuit Society, evoking a representation that valued or condemned certain aspects of the archipelago according to the priests’ purposes.
