SUMMARY:

This study focuses on the participation of Brazil in the 78th World Cup. It aims to understand the elimination of the national team through the approaches present in the sports sections of the newspapers O Globo and Jornal Do Brasil. It was necessary to analyze Brazil's participation in the qualifying campaigns and the World Cup through both newspapers, considering the context of great militarization of the national team and the political interests present, as well as to analyze the documents produced by the SNI - Serviço Nacional de Informações, Centro de Informações do Exército - CIE, Centro de Informações do Exército - CIEX and telegrams sent by the Brazilian Embassy in Buenos Aires to Brazil, regarding the World Cup. The adopted model of football, the militarized administration of the CBD, and the structure of national soccer were held responsible for Brazil's poor campaign in the competition. We conclude that, besides Argentina's controversial six-nil victory over Peru, which led to the elimination of the Brazilian team, the structure of Brazilian football, used politically both by the military and by leaders who sought political ascendancy, was pointed out by the newspapers as the main responsible for the poor campaign and consequent elimination of the national team.
