In November 1864, Paraguayan soldiers seized the merchant ship Marquês de Olinda with civilians and occupants of high positions in the imperial administration, such as Colonel Frederico Carneiro de Campos, assigned to the President of the Province of Mato Grosso. A month later, Paraguayan troops attacked the southern region of that province, in lands in dispute with the Empire of Brazil. Questioned about the imprisonment of the vessel, the Paraguayan dictator, Francisco Solano López, banned the movement of Brazilian vessels along the Paraguay River and broke diplomatic relations with Brazil, resulting in the declaration of a prolonged war until March 1870, with the assassination of the aforementioned dictator by Brazilian troops in the battle of Cerro Corá. When Brazil was informed of the war by Paraguay at the end of 1864, it mobilized troops who were willing to face the enemy nation. However, the military services were considered degrading, the salary had been outdated since 1825, the armament was obsolete, the accommodations in the barracks and training centers were ruined, and the lousy food was served only once a day. Therefore, to leverage the action and manage the fighters who formed the battalions, in January 1865 the Imperial Government instituted the "Corps of Volunteers of the Fatherland", where indigenous, manumitted blacks and any Brazilian between 18 and 50 years old, as long as he was not a member of the National Guard, could join. However, in parallel to voluntarism, the police forces of the Province of Alagoas recruited indigenous people considered criminals, imprisoned married men, carried out night patrols, recruited supposedly drunk indigenous people and used other recruitment methods considered arbitrary. In this sense, through documentary research carried out in the Public Archive of Alagoas (APA), the Historical and Geographical Institute of Alagoas (IHGAL) and the State Public Archive Jordão Emerenciano (APEJE), in Recife / PE, we will discuss the forms of recruitment and militarization of indigenous people of the Province of Alagoas for the Paraguayan War, highlighting the truculent actions of the fearsome recruiters. Despite this, far from euphemisms and generalizations, we will seek to emphasize the forms of indigenous protagonism throughout the war, demonstrating how they acted in defense of specific interests, not only being passive subjects in the battalions sent to fight against Paraguayan soldiers in the Southern Cone
