ENGENHO DE DENTRO STATION: HOUSING, WORK AND SOCIAL DYNAMICS 1855 TO 1890
Urbanization, Work and Freedom.
This research aimed to analyze the relationship between railroad and urbanization in Rio de Janeiro, with an investigation of the urbanization process that occurred in Engenho de Dentro. The cut from 1855 to 1890 is observed the idea of modernity and progress that was created around the implementation of the railroads in Brazil, in this research the Estrada de Ferro D. Pedro II and the repair and maintenance workshop built in Engenho de Dentro are highlighted. Because with the construction of the workshop, we see a population growth in this locality, and from that, there is the construction and appearance of houses that were directly linked to the urbanization process of this space, which played the role of sheltering the workers of the D. Pedro II Railway. With the analysis of this process, we have the possibility of observing the workers' relationships and lives in this new context, which was the introduction of free work, reflecting the issue of freedom.
