SUMMARY:

This dissertation seeks to investigate the possible family arrangements for racialized women and children in the municipality of Piraí between 1870 and 1910. We focus on the traces of the life experiences of the women and children who passed through the Orphans'; Court of the District of Piraí, highlighting their actions in relation to the debates on the gradual emancipation from slavery following the Law of September 28, 1871. Through the agencies of mothers, children and close family members, we sought to analyze three specific aspects: family, work and freedom. To discuss how the family dynamics of racialized people were impacted by slavery even after the regime was abolished. In the following pages, we will deal with the specificities of black women and mothers, as well as the insertion of freed and naive children into the worlds of "so- called"; free labor in the municipality. The analysis of this documentation is based on the need to think about the family and work dynamics that took place beyond captivity in a municipality that had an enslaved population that for many years remained larger than the free population. Our first objective is to investigate the boundaries between slavery and freedom in the construction and permanence of family ties between individuals of different legal status.
