TITLE: From the perspective of destruction: an analysis of volumes IV, V and VI of Theodore de Bry's "Grands Voyages" (1594-1596) inspired by Girolamo Benzoni's "Historia del Mondo Nuovo" (1565)

SUMMARY:

The present research aims to think about the relationship between the Spanish and the

indigenous people in America through the engravings present in volumes IV, V and VI of the

“Grands Voyages” by Theodore de Bry, entitled “America Pars Quarta” (1594), “America

Pars Quinta” (1595) and “America Pars Sexta” (1596). Through the analysis of these sources,

we intend to think about the representation of violence committed by the Spanish against the

natives in the New World and the construction of the Black Legend in the engraver's

production. To discuss the anti-Hispanic narrative, the aim is to understand and relate the

political-religious issues that involve de Bry's life with his production, observing how the

persecutions suffered directly impact his works. In dialogue with the bibliographies about the

engraver, a broad overview will be presented about the discussions related to Theodore de

Bry's productions, focusing on the themes explored by him in the Grands Voyages collection,

such as fantastic imagery, cannibalism and Spanish violence. The volumes selected for this

research were inspired by the book “Historia del Mondo Nuovo” by Girolamo Benzoni,

originally published in 1565. A thorough analysis of the written source is necessary to

identify how the author represents the Spanish and consolidates his narrative as a of the main

materials for Black Legend in the 16th century.
