The Part of the Whole Less the Rest: The Organization of the Conservative Party in Rio de Janeiro (1853-1868)
his research presents a study of the organization process of the Conservative Party in Rio de Janeiro city during the period from 1853 to 1868. It enfold partisans groups and political programs, however prioritizes the formation of a collective will which guides social experience through the state, in the political, social, economic and cultural spheres. To do so, the research is divided in four parts. At the first, I sough to analyze the formation of Conservative Party based on the Saquarema Party disorganization and the rise of the Ministry of Conciliation, and to understand its new political doctrine and its membership arrangement. In the second part, I tried to observe the social interests of slave, coffee plantation and capital owners of the Paraiba Valley, as well as the party restructuring carried out by the compromises between the senhoriato and the Conservative Party. In the third part, I sough understand the public forms of participation in imperial politics, the opinion fights to leading collective interests, and the ideological form that theses participation and fights built around the idea of progress. In the fourth part, I tried to investigate the cunning way in which the collective wills of monarchy, nationalism and saquaremismo organized themselves and restructured the Conservative Party.
