SUMMARY:

This work aimed to investigate, from the trajectory of Severino Sombra de Albuquerque, the changes occurred in the army and the social places assigned to the military during the first half of the twentieth century. To identify and question the naturalization of military identity, which are automatically attributed values such as obedience, hierarchy or apoliticism, historical sources of very different types were used: newsletters, interviews, correspondences and the production of the biographical. These sources helped in the analysis of the trajectory of Severino Sombra, which worked as a thread in the identification of several possibilities of organizational arrangements that prevailed in the Army throughout the twentieth century. This historical analysis allowed us to observe how the military identity is transposed, therefore not being able to transform it into a semiotic icon.
