SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the process of building authority and gender
performativity of Queen Joanna I of Naples (1326-1382) before the Church, discussing
how marriage, motherhood and piety functioned as discursive spaces of power for the
sovereign’s governability. For a period of thirty-eight years, Joanna was on the throne,
becoming the first woman of the Angevin-Neapolitan dynasty to rule. She exercised, as
reigning queen, the political, gender and contractual responsibilities that her position of
power and the Church required - given her subjection to the religious institution as a
vassal and Christian. Despite having the dynastic right to govern, the queen needed to
legitimize herself as sovereign. Crossing, thus, a process of construction of authority
and performativity throughout the four decades of reign, being impacted by the religious
normative matrix, as well as by power disputes and sociability relations through
epistolary communication with the papacy and contemporary mystics. Joanna’s context reveals the strategies, transgressions, and complexities of the exercise of power and

female royal agency in the later middle ages.
