SUMMARY:

This research analyzes the contributions of Ancient Egypt to the modern world, with a particular focus on its religious influence. Beginning in 1955, with the publication of The African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality by Senegalese historian, philosopher, linguist, and physicist Cheikh Anta Diop, various African intellectuals—later identified as Pan-Africanists, Egyptocentrists, Afrocentrists, or Vindicationists—began to argue that Pharaonic Egypt was a Black civilization that profoundly shaped the religious imagination of the ancient world. Diop’s theses inaugurated a new paradigm within post-war Pan-African thought, giving rise to what became known as Diopian thought. To this day, this paradigm remains central to historians studying the contributions of Pharaonic Egypt to other civilizations, its racial origins, and its relationships with the rest of the African continent. Among the topics that most captivated Diop and his successors is the relationship between Egypt and the Judeo-Christian symbolic universe. This research demonstrates that this interest extends beyond a mere search for historical connections; it reflects a broader epistemological dispute. Since the 19th century, the cultural, scientific, and intellectual legitimacy of African peoples has been a recurring theme in Western thought. Within this context, the claim that Egypt served as the matrix of the Judeo-Christian religious imagination represents, for Pan-African intellectuals, a means of repositioning Africa within universal history, granting it a central status and a privileged voice.
