SUMMARY:

The essence of this research touches upon the processes of heritage listing and delisting,
the lost heritage, and the displacement of the city of São João Marcos. In pursuit of a
progressive political project, irreversible marks were left on the history of the city, the
region, and especially on its population, which was forced to abandon it. Our objective,
through the use of iconographic archives, the scarce historiography available on the city,
and primarily the historical fragments found in regional archives, is to seek connections
between what was done to its history, the lived space, and the memory of its former
inhabitants. Thus, we aim to analyze São João Marcos, its territoriality and uses, and the
impact of the city’s demise on the surrounding region, since São João Marcos was for
many years a cultural beacon for nearby towns. We also seek to discuss the cost of the
forced departure from the city in the memory and identity of the families who once
lived there and their descendants. This study further seeks to understand how the current
Archaeological and Environmental Park, established where the city once stood,
reconstructs and interprets the entire process from heritage listing to complete
destruction and planned depopulation. It also investigates the role of the Brazilian State
and the Light company, and how the city’s memory still lives on in objects and
recollections preserved by the families who once called São João Marcos home.
