SUMMARY:

The Malleus Maleficarum is considered one of the main inquisitorial manuals on the subject of witchcraft. Understanding that this manual is deeply rooted in theological and philosophical foundations, the hypothesis guiding this research was that the work could be seen as a product of the mentality of Heinrich Kramer, a Dominican inquisitor, situated within a troubled micro-context marked by local disputes and tensions in the application of the German Inquisition in the fifteenth century. Thus, the objective of this study was to understand the mechanisms of creation and the motivations behind this manual, through discourse analysis and gender relations, interpreting it as a reaffirmation of authority within the local sphere. Documentation related to the witchcraft trials of Innsbruck and Ravensburg will be used to substantiate and exemplify these local disputes, providing concrete evidence of the context in which the work was composed. In this setting, Kramer, amid a crisis of authority, sought to reaffirm his inquisitorial power by mobilizing the feminine as a central element to justify the persecution of women accused of witchcraft. The analysis of the second part of the work allows us to understand how Kramer, from his essentialist view of female nature, constructs the feminine as intrinsically dangerous and corrupt, embodied in the figure of the witch. From these analyses, we conclude that this construction reinforces his own necessity as an inquisitor, legitimizing his actions and decisions and demonstrating how the Malleus Maleficarum is the product of a troubled micro-context and of an inquisitor striving to reaffirm his authority through the use of gendered interpretations.
