SUMMARY:

The magazine Zanan (Women) was part of a series of publications aimed at women in the 1990s and early 2000s in Iran. After the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ordered its closure in 2008, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris compiled a series of articles and emblematic covers of Zanan published during the first decade of the 2000s. In 2009, the CNRS published the edition Zanan: le journal de l'autre Iran, with translations of the articles from Persian into French. The Persian magazine was shut down for being considered “too feminist,” yet its articles blended social, religious, political, and artistic issues concerning women and for women in the country. This research aims to investigate the existence of Iranian feminism as represented in the articles of Zanan and, thus, to explore women's activism in Iran before and after the 1979 Revolution.
